First thing you want to do is to connect the USB to serial adapter up and plug it in to your computer.I used version 0.74 at the time of this article. I’m sure another adapter would work, but this is what I used. Looks like you can still pick these up for cheap on eBay. I use an old Keyspan USA-19HS that I’ve had for many years. I picked mine up off of eBay for pretty cheap. Mine is simply an RJ45 connector to a DB9 (serial) connector.

So I opted to take some time to get the original Motorola RSS software running on my Windows XP laptop. GM300 Accessory Plug Pin 8 is shown as “programmable” and unfortunately wasn’t enabled by default for me. I really needed to be able to program the pins for the accessory port on the back of the unit, more specifically I need the COS pin to be enabled (see below). While it may be good at programming in frequencies and changing around the channel numbers, that is about all I was able to do with it. The GM300 Radio Doctor piece of software did a good job at being able to program this ancient radio with a “modern” OS like Windows XP. The first two things I ran across was the “Radius GM300 Radio Doctor” over at and the original Motorola Radio Service Software (RSS). This soon changed when I realized the programming options for this old radio were pretty limited. I scored a few older Motorola GM300 radios off of eBay and thought I got a great deal. Re-reading your last post, it looks like you flipped the radio already. Seems like a very good start, don't ya think? And I guess this whole reply was for 'naught. How's that sound? I don't read that you have not just tried making up a quick codeplug, and writing it to the radio. How's the audio sound? If you're transmitting, good chance the rx freq is the same as the tx freq, so program the same freq into another radio, tx and see if the thing is receiving. Might not be a bad idea get your freq counter, see what the tx freq is, and then listen on another radio. You say it keys up, so is it transmitting? Best doggone radio out there for hearing in noisy areas, if you're still running just good ol' conventional FM, imo). Like others have said, starting to be a few years now since I putze'd with one (although I still program and use the GP300's. Usual problem this would fix is transmit and receive dropping out after being on for awhile. One thing about the GM300's that I used to have to do to them is just take them apart, and clean them out best I could with a can of spray air. It came from a fire department so I am assuming it messed up by someone who didn't know enough to leave something in the codeplug/or they unplugged it while clearing all frequencies. It's like someone took the codeplug out and never reinstalled it. And it will let you do 'dirty' things to your GM300 so be careful. It will ONLY work with the GM300 series, will NOT work with the Maxtrac. Also, there does exist some third part Windows XP based GM300 software known as Radio Doctor. If you are 100 percent confident in your programming computer/RIB/cable, I would start there. It could be corrosion on the pins in the mic jack, or the little mic jack board has cold solder joints. If it powers up and transmits and receives, than all is not lost. It also needs to be relatively slow clock speed of say 800 MHz or lower. The computer needs to be booted into DOS directly. It probably won't run inside a windows DOS window. motorola software Password: yg3cif atau yf3cif xir m8268. Pinouts and interface for Motorola programming with Radio Doctor.
